Stunning success for Lib Dems in Littlestone and Greatstone

3 Oct 2003

The Lib Dems have won the New Romney Coast by-election with an amazing swing from the Conservatives. Local woman Ann Birchmore romped home with nearly 50% of the vote, with the Conservatives trailing behind with just 44%. Labour finished in a poor third place with just 8% of the vote.

New Councillor Ann Birchmore said, "This is a tremendous result for the Lib Dems. I would like to thank the people of Littlestone and Greatstone for their support and pledge to do my best for them on the Council."

The ward was previously one of the safest Conservative wards in the district. Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesman Peter Carroll commented, "This shows that the Lib Dems are on course to win the next General Election in Folkestone & Hythe Constituency. The people of Littlestone and Greatstone made an excellent choice today and I know that Ann will not let them down."
