Tarmac gangs target Kent Churches

26 Jan 2007

Kent Trading Standards have received information indicating that tarmac gangs are targeting local churches and similar organisations. The usual approach of these gangs is to give a very reasonable quotation before work begins, and to increase the price as the work progresses. When the work is finished, the gang members may behave in an aggressive manner to ensure that payment is made. The quality of the workmanship can be very poor.

The gangs rely on 'shaming' trustees or other responsible people into paying thousands of pounds for poor work.If you are responsible for a church, church hall or similar building, please be very cautious if approached. If the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Kent Trading Standards would advise anyone to take their time and get a number of quotes from reputable traders before agreeing to have work done. There are very few property maintenance jobs that need immediate attention.

If you are targeted in this way please report the incident to Trading Standards via Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
