Resident's dismay at the possible closure of their local Post Office in Hawkinge deepened today with the revelation that other Tesco stores do contain Post Offices.

Until today, it had been understood that the reason the Post Office was to close was that it is Tesco's policy not to run Post Offices within its stores.

Local Councillor, Peter Smith said "I am truly appalled by this discovery. When I spoke to Tesco about our Post Office they told me it was not their policy to have Post Offices in their stores. Now I find that there are Tesco stores that do contain Post Offices! Tesco should come clean and tell us why our Post Office has to close."

Local campaigner, Peter Carroll said "I think the key question here is why do the people of Hawkinge - a large and rapidly expanding village - have to suffer the loss of their Post Office, while other communities benefit from having Post Offices within Tesco stores? This seems grossly unfair. If there is another reason then Tesco should come clean. If not, then there is no reason for the Hawkinge Post Office to close!"
