This Sunday Join the Lib Dems in Olympic Flame Demo against Chinese repression and human rights abuses in Tibet
The Liberal Democrats are mounting demonstrations against the Chinese Government's repression and human rights abuses in Tibet on the occasion of the Olympic flame being carried through central London this Sunday 6th April.
The Liberal Democrats plan to stage a peaceful protest against the Chinese governments denial of the most basic human rights and civil liberties without prejudicing the success of the Olympic Games or suggesting any boycotts. Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has also written to the Prime Minister asking him to pull out of this weekend's ceremony welcoming the Olympic torch to London in advance of the Beijing Games.
If you would like to join the protests, you have three opportunities:
- join us in Bloomsbury Square from about 11.45am to collect flags, banners and placards and then to congregate at the junction of Bedford Place and Great Russell Street where the Olympic torch will pass at 12.20pm. This will be part of the wider 'Free Tibet' demonstration organised by the Free Tibet Campaign who are supplying some of our equipment.
- attend the Tibetan Freedom Torch Rally from 2.15pm to 3.30pm at which NORMAN BAKER MP will speak. It is a rally and cultural event at which the Tibetan Freedom Torch will be lit and traditional and modern Tibetan music played.
- join the Southwark Liberal Democrats from about 2.45pm in Potters Field Park (outside City Hall near Tower Bridge) to demonstrate as the Olympic Torch is carried from Tooley Street to City Hall.
Please e-mail Denys Robinson at denysrobinson1@googlemail.com if you wish to attend the Southwark event as it will help to know numbers.
