Time to cut waste

Liberal Democrat MEPs are backing reforms which would cut waste and red tape in the European Union.

"Conservative and Labour Governments alike have allowed political fudges to rack up costs," said Chris Huhne. "Every month thousands of MEPs and staff troop from Brussels to Strasbourg and back again at enormous cost."

The Liberal Democrats want to see an end to this 'travelling circus' and believe that there are more important priorities to spend taxpayers' money on.

Lib Dems want to ensure value for money in Europe and to make its institutions more open and accountable. They will:

  • Root out fraud and cut red tape.
  • Make the Council of Ministers pass laws in public not in secret.
  • Make UK Ministers more accountable to the UK Parliament for their approach in Europe.
