Tories Will Never be the "Workers" Party

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron MP has today attacked David Cameron for pure rhetoric over his claim the Conservatives are the Workers' Party. He said the words would ring hollow to millions of people.

In Today's Times, the Prime Minister said the the Tories were now the 'Workers' Party'.

These words are at odds with the facts. In July the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) warned that low-income workers would not be compensated by 'living wage' measures announced in the budget.

It said George Osborne's new "living wage" would fail to compensate low-income workers for the £12bn cuts in the welfare budget, some of which will leave tax credit claimants up to £1,000 a year worse off.

Tim Farron said:

"Cameron may be a former advertising executive, but trying to rebrand the Tories as the 'Workers' Party' is laughable. How can his party represent the interests of hard working families when they are happy to hit the young and vulnerable with punishing cuts?

"With Labour in ideological meltdown, only the Liberal Democrats will stand up for the vulnerable with economically credible plans."
