Trading Standards Advice on Ebay "Phishing" emails

27 Apr 2007

Kent Trading Standards have issued a warning to warn consumers about a number of email messages in circulation that purport to be from Ebay.

The emails may look very convincing, but are intended to gain personal financial information or access to your account. These 'phishing' emails may ask you to update your details or ask you to pay for an item you have never ordered. Be very cautious. Do not click of any of the links in the message and forward it to both your internet service provider and spoof@ebay.co.uk .

If you have an Ebay account and you receive a suspicious message purporting to be from Ebay, do not open it but look at your own message folder in 'My Ebay'. Genuine messages from Ebay should also appear in this folder.

The Ebay website does feature advice on how to protect your account. For information on your rights as a consumer please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or www.consumerdirect.gov.uk
