TV Deal Too Good to Be True?

20 Jul 2010

Kent Trading Standards have received reports of men selling shrink wrapped flat screen TV's from the back of a truck in the Folkestone and surrounding areas. Their information suggests that the sellers have no fixed address.

If you are approached by anyone offering you TVs or any goods from the back of a van, or by someone who cold calls at your house, Kent Trading Standards would advise consumers to act with extreme caution. Be aware that if it seems too good to be true it generally is. You may feel pressurised into buying something you do not need. If the goods are subsequently found to be faulty, or stolen, you will have very little likelihood of obtaining the redress you are entitled to if you cannot trace the seller.

If you are considering buying such goods we recommend that you go to a reputable trader, if the goods cost more than £100 and the retailer ceases trading you will be afforded more protection in obtaining redress if you paid using a credit card.

If you are considering making a large purchase it is always best to compare prices from several reputable traders. To find a reputable trader ask for recommendations from friends and family and visit www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk to find a trader who has been vetted by Trading Standards. Consumer Direct can also provide details of Trading Standards Approved Traders and they can be contacted on 08454 04 05 06.

To report similar incidents or seek advice please telephone Trading Standards via Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
