Welcome for consultation on the potential renaming of Mundella Primary School to The Walter Tull Primary School
Lib Dem Councillor Tim Prater has warmly welcomed the consultation by Mundella Primary School on a potential change of name to "The Walter Tull Primary School".
A letter from the headteacher of Mundella Primary School has been sent out, saying:
"Mundella School is considering changing its name to The Walter Tull Primary School. Walter Tull is significant figure in history and attended the school at the turn of the century. Additional information about him can be found at www.mundella.kent.sch.uk
"The school, over the past eighteen months, has been working on a project with National Westminster Archives, concerning Walter Tull, and have formed part of the curriculum around him. The council were considering a memorial which is now no longer going ahead. A change of name for the school would be a fitting tribute for Walter Tull.
"The community's views are very important and before we make any significant changes we would like to know your opinions. Please could you take the time to fill in the questionnaire... which can be downloaded and printed off from our school website."
Folkestone Councillor Tim Prater commented:
"I see this as a really positive move and hope the community agree, and urge people to complete and return the questionnaire to Mundella School - mine is in the post! Folkestone Town Council also agreed funding last week for a permanent memorial to Walter Tull in the Remembrance Garden on Sandgate Road by Christchurch Tower.
"There also seem to be moves by Shepway Council for a plaque on Folkestone bandstand, and together with the possible name change of Mundella School, this should show the pride the town feels for this special son of Folkestone."
