The surge in Liberal Democrat membership since the General Election is continuing, with over 10,000 new members having joined in under a week.

In an email from the Party's Head of Membership today, we start to learn something more about those members. He says:

  • Over half of our new members are aged under 35;
  • The vast majority (82%) have never been a member of the Lib Dems before;
  • Most (72%) have never been involved any sort of campaign before;
  • They want us to start campaigning on a huge range of issues, like protecting the Human Rights Act and blocking the Snoopers Charter;
  • Our oldest new member is 91 (welcome to the family Tily).

The top ten local parties for new members:

  • Sheffield (145)
  • Bristol (143)
  • Twickenham & Richmond (129)
  • Cambridge (122)
  • Islington (95)
  • Battersea (95)
  • Cardiff (88)
  • Lewisham (86)
  • Brighton (83)
  • Bermondsey (83)

It'll be interesting to see if the new Lib Dem members in Shepway fit those trends, or we have trends of our own. We're excited to meet them though, and there will be a New Members Event on 30th May - more details soon!
