What we're fighting for: The Liberal Democrat Response to The Kings Speech

This week Lib Dem MPs, new and old, have hit the ground running, addressing their constituents’ concerns from day one.

There’s no time to waste.

This country needs our hard working Liberal Democrat MPs to tackle the pressing issues we all face. Because after years of an out-of-touch Conservative government taking people for granted, nothing is working the way it should.

Following today’s King’s Speech, Ed Davey MP called for immediate action to address the health and social care crisis, get the economy back on track and end the sewage scandal:

During the election campaign, one issue came up more than any other, on doorstep after doorstep - the state of the NHS.

It’s why we put it at the heart of our campaign, called for it to be central to the King’s Speech, and will continue to make it a key part of our work during this parliament.

So while there are many parts of the King's Speech we welcome, from mental health reform to tougher regulation on water companies, we think the government can go further - in particular in addressing the health and social care crisis.

That includes our calls for patients to have the right to see a GP within a week or 24 hours if it’s urgent, cross-party talks and decisive action on social care, and giving cancer patients the right to receive treatment within 62 days of urgent referral.

These issues aren’t just campaign slogans to us. They are our mandate in this parliament and the foundation on which our MPs were elected.

So we will continue to fight for them.

We will provide responsible and constructive opposition to the government - advocating for the liberal solutions to issues voters put their trust in us to fight for, and the values and beliefs we all believe in, at every opportunity.
