Who knew there was so much money in farming?
It has been revealed that Shepway District Council have spent £5.3 million on buying a farm in Sellinge.
Shepway Council claim this is part of the Council's investment strategy, saying:
"When the land at Otterpool Manor Farm became available the council investigated if acquisition could be part of our plans to secure the long-term financial future of the council. The land is designated as agricultural land and will be tenanted and managed to give the council an income."
Local campaigner Ross Clark was astounded by the news. Ross says:
"If Shepway Council has money to invest why not buy up more vacant shops, flats and houses and get them let and earning rent?
"To say that the long term income from renting that farm will offer a good return on investment is clearly nonsense. Farming is really suffering and hardly likely to be a "Cash Cow" for Shepway.
"There's no way this makes sense on the justification given. Something is being hidden from us: even the Council discussion on this was held in secret."
