Will you help save the Leas Lift this Friday?
As of a week today, the Cabinet at Shepway District Council have made the decision to terminate the lease of the Leas Lift from the Radnor Estate, effectively closing the Lift.
This is the oldest and only remaining operational, water balanced cliff lift left in the country.
This leaves the lower Leas only accessible by car, or by walking, down the Road of Remembrance or as is commonly known, the zig zag path.
Many many residents and visitors, who enjoy the Lower Leas Coastal Park, will not be able to access this beautiful part of our town without the Leas Lift.
How short sighted a decision is this? Just at the start of the tourist season, the Cabinet have made a decision to remove one of Folkestone's main attractions. Local Hoteliers have just published their leaflets, with the Lift as a main attraction.
What does this mean for local business? What does this mean for local tourism? What does this mean to the local people of Folkestone, who have raised just under £25,000 to restore the carriage of the second lift for the good of the town?
For all the reasons above, there will be a demonstration,at the Leas Lift, on The Leas, on Friday 27th March at 4p.m. I believe the only chance we have of persuading the Cabinet to change their decision, to realise the strength of the opposition to their plan, is through sheer weight of numbers in a visual display of people who do not want this to happen. There will also be a petition to sign on Friday, or you can sign online now at http://tinyurl.com/d2zpvd
I hope to see all of you on Friday, when we make the Cabinet aware of the strength of feeling about this short sighted decision.
