WINNER! Disabled Access to Promenade at Sandgate
For many years, Sandgate Parish Councillors and others have been pushing to install a ramp access from Sandgate's Castle Road Car Park to the seafront. Despite disabled bays in the car park, there is currently "step only" access, making it really hard for wheelchairs, buggies and cycles to get from car park to seafront.
Repeated requests to the District Council to resolve the problem have thrown up issue after issue, including ownership, access and more.
However, we're delighted to say that a resolution has been found for the issue. Following discussions between Tim Prater and various District Council officers, a new ramp, funded by Gary Fuller and Tim Prater's District Ward Grants in conjunction with the Sandgate Society and Folkestone and Hythe District Council has now been costed, agreed and funded, and is to be installed in the new year. The grant will be spend on installing a ramp from Castle Road Car Park in Sandgate to the beach promenade to enable wheelchair users and cyclists to access the seafront from the car park.
As Tim says in the grant application itself:
"The stepped access from Castle Road car park to the seafront has long been a hazard to wheelchairs, buggies and cyclists. I'm delighted that we can finally provide step-free access."
