New database an Orwellian step too far

Ministers are to consider plans for a database of electronic information holding details of every phone call and e-mail sent in the UK, it has emerged. The plans, reported in the Times, are at an early stage and may be included in the draft Communications Bill later this year, the Home Office confirmed.

Anthony Dunning

Folkestone East ward Councillor Anthony Dunning has resigned from the Liberal Democrats, and the Liberal Democrat group on Shepway District Council. Anthony's stated intention, laid out in a letter handed to the leader of the Lib Dem group following the Shepway Council AGM on 14 May, is to join the Conservatives.

Sandgate Town Meeting Force Referendum on Parish / Town Question

Well over 100 Sandgate residents attended the Sandgate Town Meeting at Sandgate Library on Tuesday evening to call for a referendum on changing Sandgate back from a "Town" administration to a "Parish" one. The referendum was agreed after a huge vote in support at the meeting.

Exhibition on Folkestone Leas Club Area Redevelopment

A "Focus on Folkestone" exhibition is to be held on 15th May from 7-9pm at the The Club, The Leas. Local residents are invited to view and comment on an exhibition into a "major redevelopment opportunity on The Leas in Folkestone" by developers Churchgate, looking at The Leas Club site itself, at the junction of Cheriton Place and The Leas.

New Folkestone Triennial Project Details Released

Six new projects by Christian Boltanski, Tacita Dean, Sejla Kameric, Langlands & Bell, Pae White and Mark Wallinger have been announced for the inaugural Folkestone Triennial which will run from 14 June - 14 September 2008. One of the most ambitious public art projects to be presented in the UK, the Triennial is a three-yearly exhibition of works which will be specially created for public spaces throughout Folkestone.

Shepway Lib Dems would like to offer our huge sympathies to Cheriton Councillor Dhan Gurung, whose Mother died last night. Dhan only recently lost his father, and will be travelling back to Nepal tomorrow, and returning to Folkestone around 25th May.
