Climate chaos is the greatest threat facing our society. Nine of the hottest ten years on record have been since 1990. Just in Britain, we have suffered two floods in 2002 that were meant to occur only every 30 years. We have had the wettest six months since records began in the eighteenth century, and the hottest summer temperatures in 2003. Storm surges, flood damage and droughts are rising. The Thames Barrier has been raised 55 times in the last five years, 12 times in the previous five.

Tour of Britain Coming to Folkestone and Hythe

Folkestone and Hythe will welcome the penultimate stage of the cycling "Tour of Britain" on Saturday 2nd September. The Rochester to Canterbury stage heads via Tenterden to Hythe, then via Newington and Peene to Crete Road in Folkestone en route to Dover and Canterbury.

Council Spending Comparison

The Kentish Express has reported that in June and July, Folkestone Town Council spend £31,000 of its set and advertised annual budget of around £490,000. As a comparison, Shepway District Council has a budget of £16.2 million a year, and spends on average £44,383 a DAY. Kent County Council has a budget of £1.43 billion for this year - spending around £4 million per DAY.

Pedestrian safety barrier

St Martins School Safety Barrier Repaired

The pedestrian safety barrier outside St Martins School on Horn Street in Folkestone has been repaired. The barriers had been damaged for some months, and were fixed after a report from Cheriton Town Councillor Tim Prater to Kent Highway Services.

Shepway Students see Debt Increasing

The 2006 NatWest Student Money Matters survey reveals that sixth formers starting university this year expect to pay £33,512 for a three-year degree course. This is up from £28,600 last year and includes the new tuition fees. As a result, they expect to graduate with £14,779 of debt, an increase of £1,099 on 2005 figures.

Shepway Council's Dog Beach Ban Crackdown

Dog owners are being warned to keep their pets off beaches where a dog beach ban is in force. Dogs are banned from seven local beaches between 1 May and 30 September but Shepway Council has received lots of complaints about owners flouting the ban.

Shepway Lib Dems are leading the way online locally as one of the first sites to be using TV on their web site. The local Lib Dems have already featured a video introduction from Party leader Ming Campbell on the front page of the web site at www.shepwaylibdems.org.uk, and have just released a presentation from Tom Brake MP, explaining the Lib Dem campaign to replace Council Tax with a Local Income Tax.
