Conservative Crime Reduction Cut Condemned

Shepway Council's Liberal Democrat group have condemned the decision of the Conservative ruling group to approve a cut of £30,000 from the budget to be spent by the Council this year on fighting crime and anti-social behaviour.

Statement from Shepway Liberal Democrat Council Group

At last nights group meeting of the Shepway Liberal Democrats, Cllr Linda Cufley resigned as the leader of the group. Members of the group have the greatest respect for Linda, and for all the work she has done over the last 21 years for both this district and her colleagues. As Linda explained to the group last night, the reason for her resignation was to enable the group to move forward as a whole.

Lib Dem Success in Parliamentary By-elections

The Liberal Democrats have won an astounding success in the Leicester South by-election, overturning a Labour majority of 13,243 to win by a margin of 1,654 votes. Parmjit Singh Gill is now the 55th Lib Dem Member of Parliament, following Sarah Teather's success in the Brent East by-election in September 2003, where she demolished a similar Labour majority to win the seat, after a successful Lib Dem campaign in the London constituency.

The Liberal Democrats are thanking the voters of Shepway for their support in the local and European Election held on Thursday. With all the votes now counted locally and nationally, the Liberal Democrats have continued to make progress.

Tories Lowest National Poll Since 1832

The Liberal Democrats are celebrating gaining two more MEPs across the UK while both Labour and the Conservatives have lost votes and seats. The Conservatives 26.7% of the vote is believed to be their worst performance in a national poll since the Reform Bill of 1832, during the reign of William IV.

Fighting for local services

Local Lib Dems are fighting the Government's plans to 'cap' Shepway Council. If the Government gets its way, then the Council will be forced to make cuts to local services totalling £600,000. Many important frontline services could be at risk if these cuts are made.
